Going Bananas To Give Back!
Over $1,700 donated to Project Joy

We are excited to partner with Project Joy for this year’s Going Bananas Run. They are a local nonprofit that focuses on helping families and schools right here in our community. Their work is simple to understand. They make sure kids have what they need to feel supported, confident, and ready for school.

What Project Joy Does

Project Joy steps in where families and teachers need an extra hand. They provide school supplies, warm clothing, hygiene items, and comfort items that many kids go without. They help parents who are stretched thin. They help teachers who want to make sure every child in their classroom feels included. Their work lifts a lot of stress off families and gives kids a better shot at a good day.

Why We Chose Them

The Going Bananas Run is all about bringing people together and doing something positive. Partnering with Project Joy gives us a chance to turn that energy into real impact. When people join our event, they help bring more attention and support to a nonprofit that is doing important work in our backyard.

How The Race Works

Race Start

All racers arrive in their banana suits ready to take on the race course. Alone they are a lonely banana, but together the group is a mighty bunch! This is a mass start event with all bananas splitting at the gun start.

Release The Gorilla

After two minutes we release our “Gorilla” this person is dressed in their very own gorilla costume and has one objective. Chase and beat the bananas. The Gorilla is a hidden racer chosen by our leadership team.

Beat The GOrilla

If you have what it takes to beat the Gorilla $5 of your entry fee will be donated to a local charity dedicated to improving food security in the Twin Ports. You will also receive the Champions Pin showcasing your achievement

Celebrate

After the race join us for a celebration! We will have food, drinks, and more for ALL the bananas that came out to party. Grab yourself some Banana icecream, a tasty beer, or enjoy yourself a tasty banana

What They do for Duluth

At its core, Project Joy works to make sure children have reliable access to food, especially during weekends, school breaks, and other times when school meals are not available. They partner closely with local schools, community organizations, and volunteers to discreetly provide food packs and essentials to kids who need a little extra support at home.

Giving Back to The Community

Supporting our community is something Going Bananas holds close. By participating in this Duluth fun run, runners and supporters are not only promoting health and wellness but also helping Duluth food accessibility. If you have what it takes a part of your race fee will be donated to a local nonprofit that focuses on Duluth food accessibility.

2026 charity partner

Over $1,700 Donated in 2025!

Project Joy is a Duluth-based nonprofit organization dedicated to combating childhood hunger in the Northland. Established in memory of Patrick Plys, who inspired others by choosing joy even during his battle with brain cancer, the organization continues his legacy of community service. Through various fundraising efforts, including events like the ‘Channel Your Flannel’ fundraiser at the Duluth Curling Club, Project Joy raises awareness and funds to support local food programs. Notably, they have partnered with organizations such as the Union Gospel Mission, helping aid summer food initiatives for children. By engaging the community and collaborating with local businesses, Project Joy strives to ensure that no child in the region goes hungry.
